Discovery's After School Adventures Program provides our students with a variety of enrichment opportunities.

Discovery reserves the right to cancel any class due to insufficient enrollment, at which time refunds will be given. No refunds or adjustments will be made after classes begin. There are no adjustments, refunds or discounts for absences.

Theater Arts and Design 
Students will explore theatre arts using their visual skills. We will make masks, props, costumes, and puppets. Students will create characters, tell stories, and learn how to express their creativity, practice performance skills, and collaborate as a theatre ensemble.  The class will be an opportunity for students to use their artistic and technical skills together. The class will culminate in a presentation for parents showcasing the student's talents and creations. Open to current primary students only.

Afterschool STEaM Exploration Lab

Join Ms. Jane in the STEaM lab for student guided inquiry using the many different disciplines and associated equipment of STEaM. Lab will be open for students to play STEaM games, complete small projects of their choosing and use the school's STEaM assets under the guidance of Ms. Jane. Paths of inquiry can include work with: OSMO, Minecraft, board games, painting robot, small woodworking projects, Lego We DO 2.0, felt craft, beading, crochet, origami, Scratch programming, stop motion animation and more!

Photography
Join Ms. Liz to learn and execute the basic skills of photography. Students will work with digital cameras to explore different aspects of photography. We will be exploring color, texture, portraits, lighting, lines and more. Limited space is available to ensure lots of one-on-one and small group instruction. It is helpful, but not necessary, for the students to have their own cameras to work with during the photography club time frame.

F.A.C.E

The Fitness and Character Education (F.A.C.E.) program developed by Mr. Kirk Farber, 7th degree Black Belt and Seminar Speaker, combines his 25+ years training of Martial Arts, jumping rope, and juggling to guarantee results in agility, coordination, focus, and timing for today’s youth. He incorporates building self-esteem and character education through public speaking on character traits during every class session. This program is for Upper Elementary, Lower Elementary, and Kindergarteners.

Danny Witt Tennis

Danny is a USPTA Certified Professional who has spent more than 20 years developing competitive junior tennis players. He has coached USTA Team Florida teams and has coached several Jacksonville area high school Players of the Year. As a player, he achieved success as an All American at the University of North Florida.

 

Witt Tennis uses the Quickstart method of learning with modified nets/courts, compression balls, and appropriately sized racquets. This method of development has proven be be successful and allows kids to have earlier success and more fun! Fridays from 3:10-4:10.

ShiningStars Theater

ShiningStars offers an exciting dramatic play program for primary to elementary aged students that uses fun exercises and games to encourage bravery, confidence, and creativity when communicating with others. We believe what all children have to say is important, therefore the ShiningStars mission is to instill the confidence in children to clearly communicate their thoughts and feelings with the world, fearless of large crowds or intimidating settings.

Athletic Games- Mondays, Sessions 1, 2, and 3

Students will focus on playing a multitude of athletic games which will involve fair play, team building, leadership, collaboration, hand-eye coordination, agility, strength, stamina, and fitness.  The children will boost their confidence and self-esteem through fun, active, and challenging games.

 

Athletic Conditioning- Thursdays, Sessions 1, 2, and 3

Students will focus on running, agility, and strength training.  With a multitude of equipment to enhance each child’s fitness level and overall well-being.  Fair play, resiliency, and leadership are developed throughout this practice.  An exciting, fun, and challenging experience for all children.

 

Soccer- Tuesdays, Session 1

Students will focus on basic and complex skills including dribbling, heading, throw-ins, penalty-kicks, passing, breakaways, and shooting.  All children will learn how to collaborate as part of a team and the importance of being vocal on the playing field, in addition to proper positioning. Conditioning will be a vital aspect of their weekly training.  There will be a 1:1 ratio in terms of child to soccer ball.

 

Basketball- Tuesdays, Session 2

Students will focus on basic and complex skills including dribbling, passing, free throws, and shooting.  All children will learn how to collaborate as part of a team and learn the importance of being vocal on the court, in addition to proper positioning.  Conditioning will be a vital aspect of their weekly training.  There will be a 1:1 ratio in terms of child to basketball.

 

Flag Football- Tuesdays, Session 3

Students will focus on basic and complex skills including plyometrics, agility, sprinting, passing, catching, and punting.  All children will learn how to collaborate as part of a team and the importance of being vocal on the field.  Conditioning will be a vital aspect in their weekly training.

There will be a 1:1 ratio in terms of child to football.

 

YOGA

 

Yoga Club

Themed classes explore yoga poses in a fun and creative way.  Energy-releasing warm-ups are followed by a flow of postures mixed with music, crafts and stories.  Children learn to focus and center themselves through balancing postures and various breathing activities and visualization techniques. Lessons also build on students’ ever-growing knowledge and self-confidence through affirmations,   self-expression and basic anatomy.

Move with Me                                   

Using the play-based Movement and Mindfulness curriculum, children will enjoy a variety of movement enrichment activities including yoga adventure stories, cooperative games, and  movement  to  music. They will also practice mindfulness exercises and use specific self-regulation techniques, called Adventure Skills. Each student will receive a take-home set of cards that can be used to help yourselves and your children de-stress, re-group, soothe, calm, and center as needed.  Building strong bodies and nurturing healthier, happier, learning-loving kids!

Yoga for Athletes                                                                                         

Yoga is a perfect complement to any sport! Whether you run, surf, ride horses, dance, play tennis, golf, any ball sports, etc. yoga gives your body a chance to stretch, build strength, flexibility & can also help with injury prevention. Classes include partner or group poses, age appropriate yoga games and breathing exercises and visualization techniques that improve focus and concentration.

ART
 
Tuesday - After School Art Camp
Students will be exploring a variety of media and techniques, developing skills in drawing, painting, collage, and sculpture, with an effort to include natural and found materials and to promote recycling or repurposing of materials. Student input will help determine our direction and guide project choices, with more challenging, complex projects building on basic skills and experience. Ms. Shelley’s camps are designed to develop personal expression and creativity, encouraging individual interpretation, choice and flexibility within the structured format for a project or theme.  It is hoped that each child will experience the joy in discovering his/her unique creative voice, the reward that comes from persistence and meeting new challenges, and the fun of sharing art with peers. Camps are open to first through 6th grade.

Wednesday - Special Focus Art Camp
Special focus art sessions will explore different materials and media in-depth and allow students to create more complex projects building on basic skills and experience with the specific media. Camps are open to first through 6th grade.
